Selling the Family Home

Independent Living Reno NV

The time may be right for you or your parents to move into a senior living community but you are concerned about selling the house.  We are all aware that the housing market has recovered from the poor market of a few years ago but finding the right buyer can often still be a challenge.

There are some things you can do to give yourself an edge over the competition.  The most important thing is to set the right price as a house priced too high is just not going to sell in any market.  Be sure to take condition of your home into account and sale prices of comparable houses in the area.  Do not assume the price necessarily reflects the assessed value.

If your house has been on the market for a while, re-evaluate what is going on and discuss with your agent any feedback he is getting from prospective buyers.  It may be some repairs and upgrades are advisable and could make a difference.  Ron Phipps, a principal broker with Phipps Realty and Relocation Services in Warwick, R.I., say, “If the house looks 40 years old with 40-year-old paint, 40-year-old appliances and 40-year-old carpet, that’s a hard sell”.  Remember that an old house can just look old, or with a few well-placed updates, you can transform it into a classic.

Steps to staging your home to get ready to sell:

Clean everything inside and out.  Do not forget windows and steam clean the carpets.  Make sure to eliminate any pet or cigarette odors.  Paint walls that are dirty and replace stained or worn out carpet (consider putting in wood or tile floors).  Stick to neutral colors.

Fix anything that is broken or damaged.  You could consider having a home inspection done as a buyer will probably do one anyway.  It allows you to take care of repairs beforehand.

Get rid of clutter throughout the house and do not forget countertops.  Removing as much as possible will help to give the impression of more room.

Take down anything that could be offensive and put away personal items and mementos.  The idea is to let a prospective buyer picture living there.

Open blinds and windows to give more light and let fresh air in if the weather is cooperative.  Set out a vase of cut flowers.

Sometimes seniors think it is better to modify their current home and postpone moving into a senior living community.  Studies show that making even small modifications can negatively affect home equity down the road when someone wants to sell.  People can feel disconnected to a house that looks like an “old person’s” home.

Sharing Meaningful Activities and Special Events

MorningStar of Sparks - Blog 91 Pic

At MorningStar of Sparks, our residents and staff work hand-in-hand to create a loving, warm community.  Part of our family-like atmosphere comes from making memories and celebrating life’s special moments together.  Each month our calendar is filled with daily activities as well as an array of special programs.

To help raise awareness for the memory-impaired, our community recently took part in the Alzheimer’s Association’s “Longest Day of the Year – Up with Hope, Up with Awareness, Up with Compassion” event.  While the summer solstice in 2017 was officially June 20, we celebrated on June 21 with fundraising by way of a memorable music concert and yard sale.  Another meaningful activity our community recently participated in was the Optimism Walk to support the American Parkinson Disease Association.

Another example of recent special events at MorningStar was our annual Luau! Residents wearing aloha shirts and leis enjoyed fresh Hawaiian cuisine in the courtyard transformed into a South Pacific getaway.  Two dancers took us on a tour through the islands of Polynesia, teaching Assaad, our Executive Director, a thing or two about rhythm.

And who knew how much artistic talent was hiding in our community? Our second annual Resident Art Show was a huge success. The Dining Room was decorated with original watercolors and oil paintings: family portraits, stunning vistas and ingenious abstractions.

If carefree retirement years amid beautiful surroundings, resort-style amenities, and fun-filled and meaningful activities sound good, MorningStar of Sparks is the place for you.  We encourage you to schedule a visit to our community to find out for yourself why our residents are proud to call it home.

MorningStar Offers a Wide Range of Services

post 25

While MorningStar of Sparks is proud to provide high-quality independent living, assisted living and memory care for seniors, we also provide our families with some lesser known services.  One example is our Companion Living option that is designed for two unrelated people of the same sex to share a suite.

This is an ideal solution for those wishing to share expenses as the rent of the suite is split between the two residents as well as a way to build a lasting friendship.  Even if you do not have someone in mind to share a suite, we will help you find a roommate and go to great lengths to match you with an individual who has common interests and similar background.

A roommate can also help to ease your transition to senior living.  You and your roommate can look out for one another, and as you are familiar with each another’s habits and personalities, may be the first person to notice changes in health and abilities.  Shared lives can help to boost health through improved sleeping patterns and an increased appetite.  When you take advantage of companion living, you are still offered all of the personalized care and first-class amenities extended to our other residents.

We also feel privileged to have veterans as part of our community and when we hear of vets who are interested in our community, we are pleased to direct them to the local resources that can expertly handle their application process for “Aid & Attendance.”  This is monthly benefit payments extended through the V.A. to certain wartime Veterans (and their survivors) with financial need and physician orders for regular assistance with the activities of daily living.

Please visit our website to learn more about these and our other programs designed to serve our seniors.  Offering independent living, assisted living and memory care, we are committed to giving our residents a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community.

As MorningStar Senior Living of Sparks is committed to providing the finest care and services, we always encourage feedback from our residents and their families.  We are especially gratified when our dedicated staff members are recognized for their efforts in helping to create a true home for our residents.

One such comment that touched our heart and reminds us why we are here was from a resident’s son.  He writes, “I took my mother to MorningStar Senior Living of Sparks about 2 years ago. Keep in mind that she is over one hundred years old and ever since she got there she has had excellent treatment.  The management and the staff are extremely kind, much more than we expected. They have a nice facility and beautiful accommodations and I probably wouldn’t take her anywhere else, I know that I wouldn’t.”

We also feel honored to have a resident write, “The staff treats everyone well and the residents seem happy. I had family that lived in the area while the building was being built about 7 years ago. They watched the building go up and recommended my husband and I move here when the time came. I’m happy we made the decision to come here. The staff tells us they treat us like family and I really think that’s true. I know it sounds high in the sky to say, but that’s how I feel. I’m quite active here in the community.  I participate on a number of committees and try to stay as active as possible. If you’re looking for a place to call home with people who consider you family this is a good place to settle down.”

Our goal is to be there for each resident as well as for their family members as we proudly provide the best independent living, assisted living and memory care in the area.  As a resident, you will be served daily, nutritional meals prepared by our Executive Chef.  In addition you will find a whole host of amenities including a bistro, theatre (including Wii), library with computers and newspapers, game room, salon, fitness room and much more.  Residents also have a wide array of activities to choose from that include fitness classes, entertainment, games and special outings.  We invite you to come join the fun!

Learn More about Senior Living Communities

Senior Living Reno

For many elderly adults, the thought of moving from their home is overwhelming.  However the truth is that today there are many excellent options for seniors specifically designed to enable them to keep their independence.  One example is senior living communities that offer a range of care options including independent living, assisted living and memory care.

The goal of senior communities is to give aging adults the opportunity to maintain their independence while providing convenient access to assistance, activities and companionship.  All too often, seniors mistakenly think that moving into a community setting means they have to give up their privacy.  Again this could not be further from the truth as communities like MorningStar Senior Living of Sparks offer a choice of spacious private suites for independent living, assisted living and memory care.

Another issue older adults worry about when moving into senior living is that they will be leaving their families.  The fact is senior living communities offer their own sense of comfort with 24/7 security and care.  So if you need help in the middle of the night, someone is there to respond quickly.

Seniors also cite the fact that they think moving to a senior living community will mean they have to give up the things they liked doing around their home such as gardening and having a backyard to enjoy the outdoors.  The truth is that living in a community probably means you will be busier than when you lived alone.  Senior communities are designed with an array of activities such as gardening and book clubs, fitness rooms, outdoor patios and strolling paths, game rooms, theaters and much more.

To see one of the finest examples of senior living, we encourage you to take a look at MorningStar of Sparks’ website or contact us for a visit.  We are located in a quiet neighborhood on the edge of the city but still conveniently situated near shopping centers, banks, restaurants and medical facilities.
